DARIEN, GA / SAVANNAH, GA, Shamrock+, a Savannah-based visual solutions company, is proud to have supported the award-winning restoration of the historic Adam Strain Building by providing construction documentation photography used in the official award submission.
Led by preservation firm Ethos Preservation and Principal Rebecca Fenwick, the multi-year rehabilitation project was recently honored with a 2025 AIA Savannah Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
Estimated to have been built between 1813 and 1818 by Virgil H. Vivion using tabby concrete—a technique developed and documented by McIntosh County native Thomas Spalding—the Adam Strain Building is one of Georgia’s oldest surviving waterfront structures. It withstood fires, hurricanes, and the devastation of Sherman’s March during the Civil War. The building, long a fixture in the community and central to Darien’s architectural identity, was at risk of collapse before this restoration effort began.
“The Adam Strain Building has long been a symbol of Darien’s rich history and resilience. This project was about more than saving a structure — it was about honoring the past while creating space for the future. Collaborating with teams like Shamrock+ allowed us to document that journey with the care and precision it deserved,” said Rebecca Fenwick, principal at Ethos Preservation.
The Adam Strain Building now stands as a testament to the resilience of historic structures and the people who preserve them. Its rehabilitation serves not only as a community catalyst, but also as a case study in the thoughtful restoration of early 19th-century tabby masonry.
“It was an honor to visually preserve a building that has stood through more than two centuries of Georgia’s history. Capturing the restoration of the Adam Strain Building was about more than just photography—it was about helping tell the story of resilience and craftsmanship that brought it back to life,” said Jim Lee,co-founder & CEO of Shamrock+.
Technology played a vital role in preserving this site. Through professional construction photography, Shamrock+ created a clear visual record of the restoration process. These images were not only integral to the award submission, but also served as essential tools for evaluating progress, guiding decisions in the field, and documenting best practices for future preservation efforts. As visual documentation becomes increasingly important in the stewardship of historic places, projects like this underscore how technology can help ensure that stories of the past remain accessible, understood, and preserved.
